Now and Then: Broadview and Danforth

Broadview and Danforth (NOT Danforth and Broadview) is an iconic intersection. It has changed tremendously over time, obviously, especially with the construction of the Prince Edward Viaduct nearby which opened up the east end. We forget that the Don Valley kept the east somewhat separate until the viaduct was opened for actual usage in 1919.

Broadview and Danforth, October 2026. This is the same bank building seen in the above photo. I took this very recently walking northbound on Broadview.
I didn’t want to omit this City of Toronto Archives photo of the construction process from 1916. Considering the viaduct had traffic crossing it in 1919, things were built a lot more quickly then. For comparison, you never seen any exact completion dates for the Ontario line bridges being built across the Don Valley right now.
